Bitterleaf Egusi Soup vs Ugu Egusi Soup

We have two options for vegetables when preparing Egusi Soup: bitter leaves or ugu (Nigerian pumpkin leaves).
Which one do you prefer? Egusi Soup prepared with ugu or the one prepared with bitter leaves?

Bitterleaf Egusi Soup vs Ugu Egusi Soup

Give me Egusi Soup prepared with bitter leaves any day! Egusi Soup is too “sweet” for me; it even gives me heart burn. When I was younger, I could not keep Egusi Soup down for a minute. This made eating Egusi Soups in restaurants impossible because they always always use ugu when preparing Egusi Soups.

Bitter leaves tone down the sweetness of Egusi Soup for me. It’s not that the bitter leaves are bitter o. I cook with bitter leaves that do not contain any atom of bitterness. It’s just that well-washed bitter leaves have a neutral taste while ugu has that special taste that when combined with egusi, makes my stomach rumble in anger. Even when I smell the soup, that combination puts me off big time. 😀

So what about you? Which one do you prefer and why? 😉 Let me know in the comments below.

  1. I Love both but my husband does not like the taste of bitter leaf in egusi soup after he ate it from a neighbor and asked me not to use bitter leaf for him. He says he prefers ugwu not overcooked in the soup

  2. mmh Aunty Flo don carry come. Bitterleaf in Egusi soup? I use ugu or ukazi.

Bitter leaf and ugu in egusi soup has two distinct tastes and since variety is the spice of soups, why not both people? personally I love egusi and bitter leaf simply because the bitter leaf tones down the sweet taste of egusi itself. My family would eat any of the soup i put on the table so long as it has egusi in it!

Funny enough I just made egusi soup this morning, however I prefer combining vegetables, like I made the soup with Ugwu and ukazi or ogazi(mixing up d names, but it’s d leaf that has taste n scent but it’s not scent leave sha), trust me the combination is wow. However if I am to use single vegetable, it will be bitterleaf, I am just like Flo when it comes to keeping egusi soup down, it makes me stool.

I like both of them. God created variety; so i like enjoying the creation of God. But i promise you Aunty Flo am going to give attention to this because i eat it without minding but i will really ask myself from now on which one of them do i really love.

  7. I use either bitterleaves or ugu with small amount of utazi leaves. I can’t use ugu only.

I prefer the one with bitter leaf, because it leaves a special taste in ur mouth and helps cure stomach upset especially when you add a little okro to it. I made it last week and am still enjoying it. Bitter leaf does not go weak and over soft like ugu, when used so I also love it for that.

  9. uka blessing says

I prefer the bitter leaf in egusi soup,it gives the soup a unique taste and it’s also medicinal (the bitter leaf). Thanks Flo.

  10. Egusi with bitterleaf. It has this unique flavour and does not lose taste quickly like ugu.

  11. bitterleaf egusi soup is the best. till the soup finishes d taste does nt diminish. mostly wen u use d ‘slightly bitter’ bitter leaf.

  12. I cook my egusi in a way dat I enjoy using both bitter leaf nd ugu but is lyk I will try bitter leaf alone

  13. Well done for the good job. As for me l like both. Ugu in egusi is more softer in the mouth than bitterleaf. l cook either of the two depending on the mood, but since l find out that my huby prefer bitterleaf in egusi soup, l cook more of that.

  14. What of egusi with uziza, since I started cooking egusi with uziza I no longer use ugh, it taste different n delicious.
